Abstract

Cerebrovascular disease is a major cause of avoidable death in the young, stroke can be particularly devastating in a young adult, in addition to the dramatic consequences of the stroke on the patient, there can be a considerable burden on the family and the community when permanent sequelae remain, a fundamental challenge in approaching a young stroke patient is that much broad spectrum of pathogens may be involved in stroke aetiology, full evaluation of young patients is likely to elucidate underlying causes , many of which are treatable . This review presents a practical approach for the evaluation of young adults with stroke that individualizes decisions on diagnostic tests based on clinical features and results of baseline and at many occasions on special investigations.
