Abstract

Ninety-six children with acute rheumatic fever admitted to Al-Fateh Children Hospital, Benghazi, were evaluated. The average age at admission was 10 years. The majority (73%) were admitted in the period from September to December. There was no decline in number of cases during the study period, 62 patients had a history of sore throat preceding the admission, 40% had a previous history of rheumatic fever and 50 patients had more than one admission due to the same problem. Migratory polyarthitis was the commonest manifestation and was seen in 84 (86.4%) children, followed by carditis 44 (45.8%), and chorea in 4 (4.1%). Echocardiography detected abnormalities in 62 (64.5%) patients; mitral valve was the most commonly involved followed by the aortic valve. Echocardiography was a sensitive method in detecting carditis in patients with acute rheumatic fever and contributed to early diagnosis.
