Abstract

Rubella antibodies were titerated in the sera of 492 Libyan mothers and their newborn infants by the hoemagglutination-inhibition ‘Microtiter’ test. 83.33% of the mothers was 81.92% and82.92% of the infants possessed immunity against rubella (titer 1:40). The mean titer for mothers and infants was comparable (92.15 and 101.78 respectively). A proportion of infant sera (6.09%) had rubella antibody titers 4-fold or more higher than those of their respective mothers. This is strong suggestive evidence for the occurrence of in utero rubella infection. Investigation of this group of infant sera for the presence of rubella Ig M antibodies by immunofluorescence is in progress.
