Abstract

A total of 85 Shirodkar Cervical Cerclage procedures were performed on 71 patients at the Garyounis Medical School Hospital between 1974 —1977. These 85 operations resulted in 68 live births and 17 failures. The preoperative foetal salvage rate in 195 pregnancies in this group of patients was 30.0%. The post operative salvage rate including surviving premature deliveries was 80.0%. When the suture was inserted after 18 weeks of gestation the failure rate of 37.5% compared to 16.0% in patients sutured before 18 weeks gestation. No significant complications occurred from this procedure. Operations between 12—16 weeks of pregnancies gave the best results.
