Abstract

The present study has revised perinatal mortality (death between 28 weeks of gestation and the first week after live birth) and some of its determinants after 11 years since 1977. Perinatal mortality rate per 1000 births in 1988 was 24.5 compared with 27.2 in 1977. The rate for males during both years was higher than that for females. The late fetal death rate over the period had declined, although early neonatal death rate had increased. Asphyxial conditions originating in labour and conditions associated with immaturity formed 62.8% in 1988 and 72% in 1977. Congenital anomalies constituted similar proportions (10.1% to 11.1%) during both the periods; whereas, specified conditions including perinatal infections and respiratory disorders had more than doubled since 1977. Development of comprehensive documentation of perinatal deaths along with linkage with birth data was essential before undertaking comprehensive action plan for its reduction to lowest levels already achieved by some developed countries.
