Abstract
Levels of haemoglobin and serum albumin of 221 Libyan diabetic patients of Tripoli, Libya were determined.
The respective mean haemoglobin values of men and women were 16.05 + 0.119 and 14.5 + 0.08 g/dl. The respective mean Levels of serum albumin were 4.9 + 0.002 and 4.68 + 0.02 g/dl. The fasting blood glucose levels of men and women diabetic patients were 228.3 + 6.50 and 237.3 + 4.7 mg/dl respectively.
The mean haemoglobin and serum albumin levels of men were significantly higher than those of women (P<0.001).
The mean levels of haemoglobin in age and sex-matched normal men and women were 14.65 + 0.128 and 12.61 + 0.2 g/dl respectively.
The respective values of serum albumin were 4.2 + 0.04 and 3.9 + 0.05 g/dl. Both the haemoglobin and serum albumin levels of diabetic patients were significantly higher than those of their normal counterparts (P< 0.001).
A significant correlation was observed between levels of haemoglobin and serum albumin in juvenile-onset diabetic patients ( r = 0.695; P< 0.001) as well as in the maturity-onset diabetic men (r = 0.36; P< 0.001) and women (r = 0.39; P < 0.001). This correlation reflects haematologic alterations taking place in the diabetic patients.
