Abstract
Aims of the study: This cross sectional descriptive study was aimed to investigate the importance of Cryptosporidium as a cause of acute diarrhoea in children. Methods: A total of 128 stool samples from children presented with acute diarrhoea in the Tripoli area from September 2000 to April 2001 were examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts using modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain. Results: Two positive samples were detected (1.6%). Conclusion: This would suggest that Cryptosporidium is not a common cause of acute diarrhoea in Tripoli – Libya.
Keywords: Cryptosporidium, diarrhoea, children
