Abstract
Fourteen cases of juvenile diabetes presenting with acute abdomen were admitted in the pediatric surgical unit at Benghazi during a 2-year period. All patients had severe abdominal pain, mild temperature and marked acidotic breathing, and were toxic, disorientated and dehydrated. There was generalized rigidity and tenderness of the abdomen; bowel sounds were present without rebound tenderness. Laboratoy findings indicated glycosurea, acetoneurea and hyperglycemia. All cases improved within 24 hours following insulin and fluid therapy. One appendisectomy and a negative laparotomy were performed.
