Abstract

The P. T. C. tasting sensitivity were determined in a sample from Libyan population. Of a total 146 persons from Benghazi, 32.2% of non-tasters were found giving the frequency of the non-taster gene equal to 0.567.
The frequencies of non-tasters among males and females were found to be statistically significantly different, thus confirming previous observations obtained with different populations. Gene frequencies for males and females were 0.587 and 0.535 respectively. The results presented are in accord with those obtained from blood group studies and support the assumption that these markers are fairly typical of North African Arabs who have been subjected to a large genie admixture with the Southern parts of Africa.
