Abstract
Experimental atherosclerosis was produced in rabbits fed on a diet containing 1.0 gm cholesterol in 5.0 ml of olive oil plus 0.25 gm, 0.5gm and 1.0gm alcoholic extract of garlic for a period of 16 weeks. It has been observed that supplementation of the alcoholic extract of garlic at 0.5 gm or 1.0 gm in cholesterol fed rabbits resulted in a significant (P > 0.001) lowering of levels of the total serum and tissue cholesterol and a less severe degree of atherosclerosis in the aorta.
