Abstract

Pregnancy complicated by liver cirrhosis, splenomegaly and severe haematemesis was treated by emergency oesophageal transection. Variceal haemorrhage was arrested and uneventful pregnancy and delivery, three months later, of a viable infant followed. The aetiology of liver cirrhosis in this case was bilharziasis. All seven similar cases reported in literature were managed surgically, in pregnancy, but by shunt operation. We have reported what we belive is the first oesophageal transection performed during pregnancy. Both mother and child have done well since.
