Abstract
Leprosy “Hansen’s disease”, remains a baffling disease because how and why the disease spreads is still not fully understood. Some experts believe that poor living conditions, close contact, poor diet and other factors promote the disease. Genetic factors may have an important influence on the degree of susceptibility. It is an important clinical problem, affecting several million people worldwide and imposing a health and economic burden. Stigma remains a major obstacle to leprosy control despite advances in bacteriology, chemotherapy and epidemiology. Health education of patients and the general public may help to diminish the stigma of the disease. Early case detection and management with multidrug therapy is the cornerstone of leprosy control and to succeed, any control programme effort must include doctors and nurses who know about leprosy and its diagnosis and management.
