Abstract

Method and Results: Total Sialic acid (TSA) levels were increased significantly (P<0.00l 1 in sera of 28 gastric cancer patients compared to 29 normal donors. In addition, a significant increase in TSA levels was found in sera obtained from 28 gastric cancer patients compared to those of stomach tissue extracts of 17 gastric cancer patients. Carbohydrate antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3) levels in sera of gastric cancer were measured by lmmmunoradiometric assay (IRMA), It was found that CA 15-3 levels were increased significantly (P < 0.001) in 13 patients with gastric cancer compared to those of 12 normal donors. Conclusion: Total Sialic Acid (TSA and CA 15-3 levels are elevated in sera of gastric cancer patients. Therefore, they are useful as diagnostic markers for gastric cancer. Keywords: Gastric cancer.
