Abstract

Fine needle aspiration cytology of thyroid gland is now an accepted procedure in the management of thyroid lesions. Here we describe the initial experiences of cytological evaluation by aspiration of the nodular lesions of thyroid, in “7th April” Hospital, at Benghazi Libya. A
total of 316 patients were studied. Majority of patients (76.7%) had colloid goitre. There were 34 02.8%) adenomas, 20 (7.5%) carcinomas, and 8 (35) inflammatory lesions. Fifty (15.8%) smears were unsatisfactory. One hundred and twenty-eight patients underwent surgery, and the cyto-histological correlation has been performed in these cases. There was 80% correlation in cases of colloid goitre. Among the malignant cases, there was 56% correlation, whereas 31% false negatives were observed.
