Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of hepatitis B virus infection in a dialysis center.
Design : Clinical evaluation and serological screening.
Setting: Dialysis Center, 2’’ March University Hospital, Sebha.
Subjects : 135 patients attending the center for long-term haemodialysis, and 22 dialysis staff, from January 1993 to January 1997.
Results : 8.9% haemodialysis patients and 9.1% of the staff were hepatitis B surface antigen positive. Three patients had ascites and one of them died from hepatic failure.
Conclusion : The prevalence of hepatitis B virus infection is high and reflects the need for a well-planned infection control program, immunologic methods.
