Abstract

The municipality records for causes of death are not informative. The present study aims at identj5ing causes of death of patients expired in hospitals during the year 1991. This period, 1427 deaths occurred in all hospitals of Benghazi Libya. There were 414 (29%) deaths occurring among children, and 1013 (71%) deaths in adults. We analyzed the causes of death in adults (656 men and 357 women); Injury was the leading cause of death, resulting in 205 20.2%) of all deaths. Cardiovascular disease ranked second as a cause of death accounting for :92 (19%) of all deaths. Malignancy ranked third as a cause of death accounting for (18.36%) of &1 deaths. The other causes of deaths in order of frequency were nervous system diseases,
irfection, digestive system, respiratory, genitor-urinary, endocrine, metabolic, blood diseases and connective tissue disorders respectively. The aim of prevention is more important than curative action in many diseases.
