Abstract

Intrinsic innervation of the female external genitalia, both in longitudinal as well as in transverse sections was studied in rabbit, guinea-pig and man. Particular attention was paid to the innervation of labia majora and minora, clitoris, lower vaginal canal, bulb of the vestibule and the vestibular glands. Apart from gross dissections of 20 female cadavers for extrinsic innervation and silver impregnation methods for intrinsic innervation, more reliable and specific thiocholine technique was used for demonstrating cholinesterase containing neural elements.
Both the labia were found to be profusely supplied by sensory nerve fibres. Free as well as encapsulated type of sensory nerve endings were observed in these tissues. At times the histological nature of the endings was not clear due to intense enzyme reaction. The lower part of the vaginal canal, the wall of vagina and its external orifice, the clitoris and the blood vessels revealed a rich cholinergic innervation. The significance of these findings have been discussed. Anatomical as well as clinical significance of the findings in relation to pain and parturition has been emphasized.
