Abstract

Objective: To discuss the prevalence, predisposing factors and symptornatology of esophageal candidiasis in patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy from 1994 to 1998 in Benghazi. Methods : A retrospective study based on patients’ files and special endoscopic forms for symptoms and endoscopic findings of3 800 patients.
Results: 14 patients were diagnosed endoscopically and histologically to have esophageal candidiasis (0.036%) .10 of them were female (71.5%) and 4 were male (28.5%).The median age was 50 years. 28.5% of patients had no predisposing factor had typical symptoms. Conclusion: Esophageal candidiasis is a well known endoscopic and clinical entity being diagnosed increasingly and accurately. It commonly present in our patients with atypical symptoms. Diabetes mellitus is a common predisposing factor and its relation to glycemic control is yet to be established. Oral thrush is not seen in our patients as an indicator.
