Abstract
With the changes in the medical curriculum and teaching modalities there is also a need to change the methods used to assess the candidate with emphasis on clinical competence and skills as well as knowledge. The classical clinical examinations used at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at present have limited ability to test the performance of the candidate in real- life situations; they are also subjective and unfair. Objective Structured Clinical Examinations were introduced as early as 1975 and are now practised in many countries. They offer more reliable and fair tests for the candidate with an extra advantage of avoiding involvement of inpatients in the examination process. This article explores the pitfalls in the traditional examinations and the advantages and disadvantages of OSCE’s.
