Abstract

A retrospective study was carried out to identify the antibiotic(s) prophylaxis regimen(s) given to patients undergoing various surgical procedure. Ninety four patients, 41 males mean ages (36 ±0.26) and 54 females mean ages (39 ± 0.37) were randomly allocated to receive either single or multiple antibiotics. Antibiotics were administered just before or immediately after the start of the operation. Ten patients (10.6%) developed postoperative surgical site infections. The proportion of patients who were complicated with wound or other infection(s) was significantly less (P<0.02) in those receiving single than multiple antibiotics, in other wards multiple antibiotic prophylaxis did not reduce the rate of postoperative infections.
