Abstract

A novel dimethoxy tricyclic compound TI (ethyl 6,7,8,9- tetrahydro- 2,3-dimet- hoxy-9,IO- dioxo-5,8- methano-5H- benzocycloheptene-5- carboxylate) and a similar monomethoxy compound T2 its derivative T3 (hemi acetal) (1), have been pharmacologically evaluated. It appears that these compounds have nearly similar dimensions as that of stilboestrol (2). During a routine pharmacological screening it was found that T1, T2 and T3 exhibited a marked ability to potentiate stilboestrol at a dose level which had no intrinsic oestrogenic activity.
