Abstract
A total of 544 mentally disabled patients admitted to 7 institutions for mentally handicapped in Libya were tested for phenylketonuria (PUK). Seven patients discovered to suffer from phenylketonuria, all of them are severely mentally retarded. Among them were 2 families with more then one affected patients. Our study insists for the initiation of the newborn screening.
