Abstract

The plasma lipoprotein cholesterol profiles of 1770 randomly selected Libyans living in Benghazi city are described in this study. The mean levels of total plasma cholesterol and triglycerides were 160.0 and 148 mg/dI respectively. The mean levels of LDL- and HDL-cholesterol were similar to the values reported for other African nations. The atherogenic index calculated as the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol was lower than those reported for Western nations. Less than 9% of the variation in lipid level was related to age or relative body weight.
