Abstract

Pseudohypoparathroidism is a disease characterized by a defective PTH action and intact parathyroid gland and normal or high PTH; it is frequently associated with Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO) which is characterized by several distinct physical features, including short stature, obesity, round facies, subcutaneous ossifications and structural abnormalities of hands and feet. This report describes a 16 year old female who presented with pseudohypoparathyroidism associated with (AHO), a very rare cause of hypocalcaemia in which the presentation was of severe hypocalcaemia; structural abnormalities of the hands and feet and dental dysplasia but no other stigmata of the syndrome. The report also highlights the importance of considering hypocalcaemia as a cause of illnesses ranging from psychiatric problems to deadly laryngospasm and ventricular arrhythmia.
