Abstract

The efficacy of oral tablets of Prostaglandin E2 inserted into the vagina to ripen the unfavourable cervix was assessed in 223 patients. The average modified Bishop score change was 4.7 in primigravida and 5.3 in multigravida. 30.5% of primigravidae and 42.7% multigravidae went into spontaneous labour without the need of oxytocin stimulation. The groups of patients were then studied when the cervix became favourable, one after receiving prostaglandin E2 and the other without. The duration of labour in the treatment group was shorter, the cesarean section rate was lower and the incidence of postpartum hemorrhage at time of delivery was less. Side effects attributable to the prostaglandin tablets were not observed. Ninety percent of patients needed only one dose of two tablets vaginally to achieve ripening.
