Abstract

Septic arthritis is a form of infective arthritis caused by bacteria, the main risk factors are preexisting arthritis and immunosupressed state. It is a medical emergency that requires a high index of suspicion. Proper management including, synovial fluid examination, prompt initiation of antibacterial treatment and joint decompression are vital in improving outcome.
In the present article, the epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, microbiology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, preventive measures and outcome of acute septic arthritis will be reviewed
