Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is world wide in distribution, the prevalence is between 1-2%. This study was done with the aim to find out the different surgical complications of diabetes mellitus at 21 March hospital and to estimate serum levels of immunoglobulines IgG, IgM & IgA in nondiabetics, diabetics and diabetics with surgical complications.
A total of 47 patients, 7 nondiabetics, 7 diabetics, and 33 diabetics with surgical complications were included in this study. Serum Immunoglobulins IgG, 1gM & IgA were estimated in all the 47 patients using immunodiffusion technique (KALLESTAD ENDOPLATE, SINGLE RADIAL IMMUNODIFFUSION TEST KIT).
The surgical complications of diabetes mellitus included diabetic foot in 23 patients, abscesses in 8 patients and carbuncle in 2 cases. The serum Immunoglobulins IgG & IgA were statistically similar in the three groups. Serum 1gM levels were statistically lower in diabetics compared to non-diabetes. Diabetics with surgical complications had statistically lower 1gM values compared to diabetics without surgical complication.
