Abstract

This study includes 50 Libyan patients, 10- 80 years of age, with end stage chronic renal failure of different etiologies, and on regular haemodialysis, along with normal volunteers acting as control. Serum sialic acid level was measured with modified Ehrich’s method ; patients with end stage chronic renal failure had a higher mean level (172 ± 30) as compared to the control group ( 145 ± 18.88) (p <0.0001). Serum sialic acid level was significantly correlated to serum creatinine level ( r = 0. 299), suggesting that serum sialic acid varied directly with creatinine clearance.
