Abstract
A review of 53 patients with soft tissue sarcomas over a 5-year period (January 1989 to December 1993) is presented. They accounted for 5.96% of solid tumors in adults. The male: female ratio was 53:47. The majority of cases (75.4%) were in the age group of3J-60 years. In sharp contrast to the Western countries, the most common site was the trunk 62.2 7% (abdomen and retro-peritoneum 43.4% and thorax 18.8 7%). The extremities were involved in 32.07%, and the head & neck in only 5.6% cases.
Almost all types of histological presentations were noticed. Commonest among them were Rhabdomyosarcoma (15.10%), Malignant Jibrous histiocytoma (13.2%), Fibrosarcoma (3.2%), Liposarcoma (1.32%), Leiomyosarcoma (9.43%) and Kaposi’s sarcoma (5.6%). The commonest presentations were stage III (45.28%) and stage 11(33.96%). Wide excision was possible in 41.5% cases, near total excision in 30.8% cases, only biopsy in 24.5% cases, and amputation was done in 3.77% cases. Chemotherapy was given to 73.58% cases, but only 18.85% cases underwent radiotherapy. Subsequently, 50.94% cases developed local recurrence and/or distant metastasis. Out of which metastasis occurred in liver (3 7.03%), diffuse abdominal sarcomatosis in 22.22. %, in lung (14.82%), local recurrence in 14.82% and metastasis to other sites in 11.11% cases.
Only 35 cases (66%) have been coming for regular follow-up, out of which 16 cases have recurrence or metastasis, 14 have no evidence of disease and 5 have died.
Prognostic evaluation could not be done since 18 cases (34%) did not come for follow-up for the past one year.
