Abstract

Severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The path physiology of eclampsia is poorly understood but is though to be due to a disturbance in cerebral auto regulation resulting in vasospasm leading to hypoxia, oedema and poor cerebral perfusion. The lack of a full understanding of the aetiology of eclamptic seizures has resulted in considerable disagreement with regard to the ideal anti-convulsant for the prevention and control of these seizures.
