Abstract

The aim of surgical treatment of empyema is to drain pus from the pleural cavity, to facilitate expansion of the collapsed lung on the affected side, and to eradicate infection. A method using intravenous canulas (venula), transfusion sets, urethral catheters, and under-water seal bottles containing diluted Savlon is proposed. The apparatus is disposible or sterilizable, easy to obtain and handle, arid inexpensive. The average hospitilization time required was approximately 2 weeks; there were no known complications and the 46 patients were released in good health.
