The acute hand injuries in Benghazi urban area

Abstract

Focusing on the acute injuries of the hand in Benghazi urban area, population of about 1.5 million, 477 patients with acute hand injuries involving the distal 7 zones of the hand, that were sever enough to deserve admission to the orthopaedic department, and management by the hand surgery team, were investigated. This study was taken between the beginning of March 1998 and end of February 1999. We found that 35% of the total orthopaedic emergency admissions were acute hand injuries. The problem found to by 5 times more frequent in males, more commonly involving the right dominant hand, and flaring up during spring and summer. Hand injuries occurred mainly in adults during their productive age, next high incidence was among pre-school children. The most common causes were machine accidents, glass injuries, crushing by heavy objects and door injuries. The approximate cost has been calculated and analyzed .
