Abstract
Phospholipids, and in particular sphingomyelin, are involved in atherosclerosis, cancer and certain genetic diseases. As the incidence of the first two increases with age, we studied changes in the sphingomyelin fraction with age in healthy individuals. Results showed a significant increase with age, a finding supported by studies in other countries. Such increase may play a role in the rise of the incidence of atherosclerosis and cancer with age.
