Abstract
1. The Shelf Operation as a recognized procedure to stabilize the hip in C.D.H. is reviewed.
2. Variations in technique generally aim at providing a shelf which is functional and as close to the normal anatomy of the acetabular roof as possible.
3. Causes of failure of a shelf to provide support to the femoral head have been discussed and related to various technical faults.
4. The shelf procedure compares well with other stabilization operations used in
C.D.H.
