Thyroid Cancer at Tripoli Medical Centre

Abstract

We report the result of retrospective review of 143 patient’s files available at endocrine out patient clinic- Tripoli Medical Centre, with the diagnosis of thyroid cancer these include registered cases from 1985 till August 2003. the data analyzed including sex, age at time of diagnosis, pathological diagnosis, extent of the disease before treatment, types of the treatment and their complications. There were 114 female and 29 male giving the sex ratio of 3.9-1. the mean age of male at diagnosis 40.82±13.6 (range 18-65) years and the mean age of female was 42.6±16.6 (range 17-87)years. 93(65%)had papillary, 35(24.5%) follicular, 9(6.3%)medullary, 3(2.1%) anaplastic, and 3(2.1%) had hurtle cell carcinoma. At presentation cervical lymph node metastasis found in 24.5% and distal metastasis in10.5%.
