Abstract

The study is a prospective evaluation of CT scan guided percutaneous trucut needle biopsy and open lung biopsy for localized intra-thoracic lesion in 48 patients. Twenty-four patients had CT scan guided biopsy and 24 patients had thoracotomy and open lung biopsy. Histological specimens were obtained in 45 patients. Malignancy was diagnosed in 30 patients and 15 patients had non-malignant histological appearances. Accurate diagnosis was made in 30 out of 33 malignant lesions with a sensitivity of 90%. Pneumothorax was the main complication in (16.6%) of patients. CT scan guided biopsy and open lung biopsy are procedures with high diagnostic accuracy and acceptable rate of complication.
