Fifty cases of tuberculous meningitis were diagnosed in the department of pediatrics at Aleppo University hospital, Syria, between (he years 1976-1979. Various epidemiological data about tile seriousness and the comparatively high incidence of this disease have been discussed. Most children (54%) were seen between the age of 1-3 years, and a high percentage (62%) came to hospital in the third stage. Eighteen children (36%) died, and the mortality rate was higher in the first year of life. Tuberculin testing was positive in 50 % of children, while X-ray showed 54% of children to have signs of chest TB, and 8% signs of increased intracranial pressure.
