Abstract

A group of children’s sera were titrated for rubella antibodies by the haemagglutination-inhibition method. This included 9 premature infants and a group of 40 to 61 of each of the ages 1st through 12th years. 7he premature group had the lowest immunity (22.2% were immune and the mean titer was 22.2). In the groups of the first through the fourth years, 25 to 50% were immune and the mean titers were 43.8 to 55. A significant increase in immunity was observed in the fifth years group (81.8 % were immune and the mean titer was 238.2). In the sixth through the twelfth year groups, immunes ranged from 50 to 100% and the mean titer from 105 to 173.3 ( with the exception of the seventh year where only 16.7% were immune and the mean titer was 33.3).
It is concluded that a significant proportion of Libyans contract primary rubella infection at the age of 3 to 5 years.
