Abstract
This paper highlights the problem of road traffic accidents in the Jamahiriya based on 5 years data (1976-1980) and explores some of the factors and links which need particular attention in order to make motorization a safer activity.
In a country with an estimated 3 million population in 1980, 40 accidents occured daily on the average, killing about 4 persons, causing serious and handicapping injuries to 11, minor injuries to 20 and an annual damage to vehicles of 2.5 million Libyan Dinars (equivalent to US $ 8.25 million)
By 1980 there were approximately 21.64 vehicles per 100 general population, bringing Jamahiriyu closer in such affluence to most developed countries, Road traffic accidents contributed one out of 15 deaths in the country. The numbers of deaths, injuries and accidents have been on the increase though rates per 1000 vehicles have shown a slight fall.
