Abstract
The testis and scrotum possess interesting mechanism to control the testicular temperature required for normal spermatogenesis. In thermoneutral environments, countercurrenr exchange between testicular vessels effectively short- circuit heat back to the body to maintain the thermal gradient from testis through the scrotum to air. In cold, the testis is lifted closer to the warmer inguinal region by contraction of the dartos muscle and thus helps to offset the tendency to excessive precooling of the testicular arterial blood. In the present article, these various mechanisms are reviewed.
