Abstract
The study aims to establish the sero-prevalence rate of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) among healthy blood donors in Benghazi. 10550 blood donors were screened over a period of one year (1-1-1990 – 31-12-1990) for HBsAg using the counter immunoelctrophoresis or the Latex agglutination techniques. There were 201 positive subjects for HBsAg and the prevalence was 1.9%. Four age groups (18-29 years. 30-39 years, 40-49 years and> 50 years) were compared; there was no significant association between HBsAg prevalence and age. The difference between our results and previous reports from Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and Middle East were discussed.
