Abstract
Objective: to analyze the result of upper gastrointestinal endoscopic findings performed at 2 teaching hospitals in Benghazi, Libya over a period of 5 years. Methods: A retrospective study based on data entered into a computer with special codes for symptoms and endoscopic findings of 3800 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy from Jan.1994 to Dec. 1998 in Benghazi.Results:3800 upper gastrointestinal endoscopy forms were analyzed- Gastritis was found in 29.76%. Lesions found included duodenitis (21.7%), duodenal ulcer (18.42%), gastric erosions (9.26%), osesphageal varices (2.47%), gastric malignancy (1.21%), benign gastric ulcer (1.08%), oesophageal cancer (0.47%). In 20.66% of the times, endoscopic findings were normal. Conclusion: Since upper gastrointestinal endoscopiy is an easy and not costly procedure, with a high diagnostic value we recommend it as the procedure of choice to investigate upper GI symptoms.
