Abstract

Hydatid cysts recovered from 110 domestic herbivorous animals (60 sheep, 25 cattle, 20 goats and 5 camels) slaughtered in Benghazi were examined. The percentage of fertile cysts was higher in sheep (75.0%) than in goats (55.0%) and camels (40.0%).None of the cyst collected from the cattle was found to be fertile. Most of the hydatid fluids obtained from fertile and non-fertile cysts of both liver and lungs of sheep gave positive reaction in gel diffusion precipitin test. Sheep and goats hydatid fluid antigens showed almost similar antibody titres in indirect haemagglutination (IHA) test among different hydatid patients. The cattle hydatid fluids have not given positive reactions neither in GDP nor in II-{A technique. Crude somatic hydatid antigens (prepared from protoscolices and brood capsules of sheep cystic echinococcosis) appeared to be more sensitive for the diagnosis of human hydatidosis
