Abstract

Screening of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in erythrocytes of 400 healthy Libyan males revealed an incidence of 2.5% in a random Benghazi population. The quantitative levels among enzyme-deficient individuals ranged from 0 to 20% of the normal activity. Distribution of Gd gene in North Africa andArabian peninsula is discussed in the light of malarial endemicity.
