Abstract
Hemoglobin A1c levels of 500 Libyans from Tripoli, Libya were determined by the isoelectrofocusing method. In this sample population, there were 44 noninsulin-dependent diabetic patients. The mean Hb A1c concentration irrespective of sex in normal persons was 3.5% ± 0.064 (SEM) of the total hemoglobin. The mean Hb A1c level of the diabetic patients was 9.86% ± 0.68 (SEM) and was significantly higher than that of normal persons (P< 0.001). Correlations were present between Hb A1c concentration and fasting blood glucose levels (r — 0.79; P< 0.001), and the erythrocyte count (r — 0.56; P< 0.001).
