Abstract
This report describes hepatitis B Virus infection among blood donor population who attended the blood bank facility of 2nd March University Hospital during the period 1995-1997. Samples of serum obtained from donors were screened for hepatitis B surface antigen using hepatitis B surface antigen slide test.
Of a total of 3484 donors 186 (5.5%) subjects were positive for the hepatitis B surface antigen. Thus, hepatitis B virus infection in south Libya is comparable to international intermediate endemicity zones and needs to be addressed by the public health policy makers.
