Hypothyroidism—A New Clinical Subtype?

Abstract

Two young females aged 16 and 20 years presented with unusual form of Primary Hypothyroidism—large diffuse goitres with very loud continuous bruits audible and palpable over the thyroid glands. Both patients showed good response to treatment with L-Thyroxine.
It is suggested that recognition of such patients will be facilitated if, while clinically classifying Hypothyroidism, this syndrome is described to the learner under a separate heading and as a separate clinical sub-type. Unnecessary alarm about the condition and ‘unwanted’ surgery could thus be avoided specially in places where laboratory facilities are either lacking or difficult to get by.
