Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a global major health problem. It is characterised by persistently raised blood glucose above the normal range. It occurs either because lack of insulin secretion, or insulin action, or both. Our aim was to summarise some recent developments in diabetes mellitus research, treatment and knowledge and to extrapolate from these into new areas which are just beginning to be explored and into some others which are still in the future. Determine the size of the problem in Tripoli municipality. Information was taken from patients’ registry in Tripoli diabetic centre and from follow up in primary health care units. Recently (2005), In the Tripoli municipality there were 30470 patients with diabetes mellitus of those 25387 were patients living in Tripoli municipality area, which means that 2.11 % of the local population are diabetic. The local health authority should deal with diabetes mellitus as an epidemic disease because in the near future the number of patients may double or even triple . Finally, to improve the situation the following are recommended:- 1-Improve the ability of the health care staff. 2-Employ media promotion to increase the awareness of the disease in order to identify new or undiagnosed cases. 3-Successful primary prevention policies are needed. 4-Efforts to educate high-risk groups are needed as well.
